January is here; look at it, being the first month of 2024 and everything. Games are generally a very good way to take your mind off of things, and given that things simply keep happening, it’s definitely worth paying attention to some of the amazing indie games we’ve got coming up in January.
There were almost too many games to choose from this time around, but we’ve tried to pick out the games that either look the most interesting or the most promising, and now we’re presenting them to you. We’d offer you some chocolate or something, but this version of 2024 can’t even teleport food yet, so we can’t.
Drova – Forsaken Kin – 1
Drova is an action RPG that currently has a demo out on Steam, so if you like the sound of it, you can try it out without spending anything. Drova is set within the mysticism of Celtic mythology, and has you uncovering a world filled with ancient spirits and warring factions. It looks beautiful, and it could be a great open-world game to start the year with.
Sovereign Syndicate – 15
Sovereign Syndicate is a Victorian steampunk RPG that doesn’t use dice. Instead, the game uses tarot cards to sort things out, which makes the game worth checking out for that alone. Along with that, you get to control three different characters to discover not only their own stories, but also make them more powerful as you go. It’s just a really cool idea, and we’re excited to see how it all plays out.
Atlas Wept – 17
We’re sort of only listing this here because of the title, but it does also look like a really intriguing game. In fact, we’d go as far as to say it has some Undertale vibes. Atlas Wept is a retro-style RPG with a heavy focus on empathy and sincerity, where you get to find friendly robot dogs. Details on the game are pretty slim, but it has our attention.
Turnip Boy Robs a Bank – 18
The original Turnip Boy game was a riot, and this time around Turnip Boy has gone from committing tax evasion to full-blown robbery. You take control of Turnip Boy himself and get to team up with the Pickled Gang to plan a heist. You’ll be able to shake down hostages, fight the fuzz, and steal stuff. It looks deeply silly, and we can’t wait.
Enshrouded – 24
Enshrouded got a huge buzz around it during a Next Fest in 2023, and we’re definitely keen to see how the full game continues to deliver on the promises it makes in the demo. This game has you and up to 15 other players trying to survive in a world filled with menacing bosses, the chance to build incredible castles, and plenty of skills to unlock and loot to find.
Never Mourn – 29
Never Mourn lets you become a powerful necromancer who’s constantly flitting between life and death. You’ll be able to kill off enemies to resurrect them as your pawns, and fight off loads of enemies as you try to revive your own child. This is a roguelike too, so expect difficulty, but plenty of replayability.
