Legendary Tales is in Early Access, but it’s already something very special. There’s a lot of competition for good co-op dungeon crawlers in VR, with games like Dungeons of Eternity really pushing the sheer job the genre can offer to its limits. Despite this, the potential in Legendary Tales just feels like it’s off the charts.
That’s not to say what’s there already isn’t amazing though. Legendary Tales uses physics-based combat to allow you to do things like fully skewer skeletons, use hand gestures to cast spells, or literally punch the heads off of skeletons. The stat system works a bit like in Skyrim. If you use a strength weapon, you’ll gain strength, and if you use magic, you’ll gain magic and so on.
You can sort of multiclass, which is a lot of fun. For example, one of our characters is a strength mage who uses a hammer that can call down lightning strikes as a weapon in-between summoning portals that shoot ice to hammer foes. However, there’s a lot of joy to be had in minmaxing the poop out of the game too.
Nowhere does this feel truer than in the hand-to-hand archetype you can build if you only do strength. That’s because you gain skill points as you adventure, and you can use them to unlock special attacks or passives. A fair few of the skills can be used to massively buff your unarmed damage, and even allow you to parry weapons with your bare hands. It’s that build that lets you one-shot skeletons by turning their heads into a baseball.
Despite how good it already is, we’re really excited about the future. The developers have had a tough time trying to figure out how to bring their ideas to life, as you can read in their dev updates on the Steam page, but the things they want to bring into the game really do sound impressive, and we can’t wait to see the game reach its final form.
